4G telematics and GPS fleet tracking – Future proofing your fleet management

From 31 August 2024, Telstra have announced their 3G network shutdown with other providers also announcing their shutdown on similar dates.

Australian 4G and 5G network infrastructure has been upgraded over the last few years, as such the 3G network has become an outdated technology. The 4G network not only offers greater coverage and speeds but also offers lower latency, more reliable coverage and enhanced security features.

The 3G network shutdown will affect in-car telematics devices along with mobiles, all 3G devices will cease to work and will stop capturing data after the sunset. LBM 3G devices will be affected; FBT logbooks, safety data and more, potentially causing a disruption in reporting, compliance and overall fleet operations.

Making the switch to a 4G compatible telematics device is crucial to ensure data capturing continuity before 3G is turned off.

Switching over to a 4G compatible telematics device should be made simple by your provider. At LBM, we have already made the switch for our existing and new customers who have been provided with 4G devices at no extra charge as part of our integrated software platform.

While switching to a 4G compatible device, it is also worth considering an EV compatible device, even if you’re not ready to use it just yet. With more fleets making the switch to electric vehicles, being ready to swap out devices that are able to read battery levels and report on EV metrics will make this future transition even easier.

LBM’s devices are EV compatible by default, capable of reading charge levels and reporting various EV metrics, including CO2 emissions and home charging for employee reimbursements. Embracing EV compatible devices now prepares your fleet for future advancements and supports your sustainability goals.

Telematics is an integral part of any successfully operated fleet. By using telematics in your fleet, you’ll gain insights into almost every aspect of your fleet including how your vehicles are really being used, why they’re being used and by who. And almost more importantly, having an integrated fleet management software system with your telematics data.
